Structural Brain Problems in Preterm Infants

چکیده
The preterm⁄very low birthweight (VLBW) are at particularly high risk of neurodevelopmental impairment. The prevalence of cerebral palsy has decreased over the previous era. Recent advances in perinatal care decreased rates of major neurodevelopmental disability at preschool age. Recent data suggests that 85% of VLBW infants survive in the 2014 Korean Neonatal Network. Until recently, most of the studies reported in Korea were mainly focused on major disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, vision and hearing disabilities. However, as a result of long term observation of very small infants, it is now evident that a variety of different complications may commonly occur in preterm infants without major disabilities as follows: learning disability, borderline intelligence quotient (IQ), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, visuomotor integration disorder, executive dysfunction, and behavioral disorder. A follow-up study for at least 6 years revealed that 42% has minor disabilities including light mental retardation, language disorder, hearing abnormality, and ADHD [1]. Ultimate goals of thorough care of preterm infants include not only to decrease the death rate but also to increase the quality of life for survived, high risk infants. This review will discuss about the existing data of neurodevelopmental outcome in preterm infants, to improve understanding of the negative consequences of very preterm ⁄VLBW birth on brain development throughout childhood .

Introduction: Premature infants are at risk of developing hearing loss, blindness and mental retardation. This study was carried to investigate the role of predischarge mothers’ education on follow up examination of visual, hearing and brain problems in preterm infants. Methods: In a quasi-experimental study, 55 mothers of premature infants were selected by random sampling method and ass...
متن کاملAn overview of risk factors for poor neurodevelopmental outcome associated with prematurity.
BACKGROUND Preterm birth is a major cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity. While advances in medical care have improved the survival of preterm infants, neurodevelopmental problems persist in this population. This article aims to review factors associated with their neurodevelopmental outcomes. DATA SOURCES English language studies of neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants were re...
متن کاملThe Impact of Blood Sampling Site on Pain Score in Preterm Infants: A Crossover Randomized Clinical Trial
Background Blood sampling is a usual and painful procedure on preterm infant. Repeating painful procedures may affect the process of normal brain development and Pain management is important for nurses. This study was conducted to evaluate and compare pain score in two sites of blood sampling in preterm infants. Materials and Methods Blood sampling is a usual and painful procedure on preterm in...

Aim and Background:The majority of neonates admitted to intensive care units are preterm and undergoing painful procedures including blood draw and phlebotomy. Ignoring the pain of these procedures on preterm infants can cause some problems in cardio-respiratory indices such as changes in respiratory rate, heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. So using of non-pharmacological pain man...
متن کاملStructural network analysis of brain development in young preterm neonates
Preterm infants develop differently than those born at term and are at higher risk of brain pathology. Thus, an understanding of their development is of particular importance. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of preterm infants offers a window into brain development at a very early age, an age at which that development is not yet fully understood. Recent works have used DTI to analyze structural ...
